Which Witch? was first published in 1979, and it is one of her most popular and beloved books. It tells the story of a dark wizard named Arriman the Awful, who decides to hold a contest to find a witch to marry. He invites all the witches in Todcaster, a town in northern England, to compete for his hand. However, he has a secret preference for Belladonna, a white witch who can only do good magic. Belladonna desperately wants to win Arriman's heart, but she has to face many challenges and obstacles along the way.

The Plot of Which Witch?

The plot of Which Witch? is full of twists and turns, surprises and suspense, humor and romance. The book follows the adventures of Belladonna and her friends as they try to impress Arriman with their magic. Along the way, they encounter many strange and wonderful creatures, such as ghosts, werewolves, giants, trolls, mermaids, and even a talking worm.

The book begins with Arriman announcing his intention to marry a witch. He explains that he has received a prophecy that a dark wizard more powerful than him will soon be born, and he wants to retire and enjoy his life. He invites all the witches in Todcaster to his mansion, where he will judge their magic and choose the most wicked one as his bride.

Belladonna, who lives in a cottage with her aunt Sempronia, a black witch, is overjoyed to hear the news. She has been in love with Arriman ever since she saw him as a child. She hopes that he will notice her and fall in love with her too. However, she has a problem: she is a white witch, who can only do good magic, such as making flowers grow, healing animals, and creating rainbows. She knows that Arriman will never choose her if he sees her true nature.

She decides to ask for help from her friend Terence, a young wizard who works as Arriman's secretary. Terence is also secretly in love with Belladonna, but he agrees to help her anyway. He gives her a book of spells that he borrowed from Arriman's library, hoping that she will find something useful in it.

Meanwhile, the other witches prepare for the contest. They include Ethel Feedbag, a fat and greedy witch who can turn people into sausages; Mabel Wrack, a thin and cruel witch who can make people's bones break; Enid Nightshade, a young and mischievous witch who can cause accidents and disasters; and Mother Bloodwort, an old and powerful witch who can raise the dead.

The contest begins with a series of tests, such as casting spells on animals, creating storms, and summoning demons. Each witch tries to outdo the others with their wickedness and skill. Belladonna also participates, but she fails miserably. She accidentally makes the animals happy, the storms gentle, and the demons friendly. She realizes that she cannot change her nature, and she feels hopeless and ashamed.

However, Arriman notices her and feels strangely drawn to her. He senses something different about her, something that he cannot explain. He decides to keep her in the contest until the end, even though he knows that she has no chance of winning.

The final test is to raise the most terrifying ghost from the graveyard. The witches gather around a huge tombstone that belongs to Sir Simon Splint, a notorious murderer who was buried alive. They take turns to chant their spells and try to bring him back to life.

One by one, they fail. Ethel Feedbag raises a ghost of a pig that she once ate. Mabel Wrack raises a ghost of a mouse that she once tortured. Enid Nightshade raises a ghost of a clown that she once scared. Mother Bloodwort raises a ghost of Sir Simon Splint's wife, who was also buried alive with him.

Finally, it is Belladonna's turn. She has no idea what to do. She remembers a spell from Terence's book that is supposed to summon an angel. She thinks that maybe an angel will scare Arriman more than a ghost. She recites the spell and waits for something to happen.

To everyone's shock and horror, she raises the ghost of Sir Simon Splint himself. He emerges from the tombstone with a roar, holding a bloody axe in his hand. He looks around and sees Belladonna. He recognizes her as his long-lost daughter, who was taken away from him by his wife when she ran away with another man.

He embraces Belladonna and calls her his darling child. He tells her that he has been waiting for her for centuries, and that he is so proud of her for becoming a witch. He says that he will kill anyone who tries to harm her or take her away from him.

Arriman is stunned and terrified by this sight. He realizes that Belladonna has raised the most dreadful ghost of all, and that she has won the contest by default. He also realizes that he loves her more than anything in the world, and that he wants to marry her right away.

He declares Belladonna as his bride and asks her to come with him to his mansion. Belladonna is overjoyed and accepts his proposal. She says goodbye to Terence and thanks him for his help. She also says goodbye to Sir Simon Splint and tells him that she loves him too.

Sir Simon Splint is happy for his daughter and gives his blessing to her marriage. He says that he will always watch over her from beyond the grave. He then disappears into the tombstone with his wife's ghost.

The other witches are furious and jealous of Belladonna's victory. They try to attack her and Arriman with their magic, but they are stopped by Terence and the other creatures that 71b2f0854b
